Our Doctors
Dr. Jennifer Howard
Dr. Jennifer Howard was born in Ajax Ontario, a rural town near Toronto, Canada. In 1995, she graduated from Bishops University in Lennoxville Quebec, and in 2003 she graduated from the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine. As a child, her devotion to animals developed through the love of her family pets, and she often tried to sneak stray dogs into the house for love and TLC without her parents noticing! She had dogs, birds, rabbits, and fish as a young child, and by the age of 10 started working towards saving for her first horse by selling lemonade on the curb in front of her house.
Dr. Howard has experience working in both large (equine) and small animal medicine. In 2010 Boulevard Animal Hospital was created, fulfilling a lifelong dream to serve the patients and owners of her local community. She has directed its growth into a modern facility for routine care, medical, surgical and dental treatment, and is excited to offer x-ray and imaging diagnostics, emergency medicine and critical care, and behavioral consultations. Dr. Howard lives just outside of Athens, GA with her family which includes her husband, two fantastic children, two affectionate dogs, two beautiful kittens, a little coop of chickens, and a couple too many horses! She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, VIN, and is a 2004 graduate of the Chi Institute in Reddick Florida.
In addition to general practice her interests include dentistry, complementary medicine, internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, ultrasonic imaging, and behavioral consultations. When Dr. Howard is not busy at work she is an occasional equestrian who adores time with her family and friends, loves walking, gardening, reading, music, and generally being out of doors.
Dr. Harriet Daugherty
Dr. Harriet Daugherty was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Her childhood was happily spent playing soccer, riding horses, digging in the dirt, and reading, most often in the company of a family dog.
Dr. Harriet Daugherty attended college at the University of Vermont and earned a BA in English Literature before returning to school to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine. In 2002 she graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She practiced in Kentucky and Atlanta, before returning to Athens.
Dr. Daugherty joined Boulevard Animal Hospital full-time in 2015 and found her veterinary home. She is a compassionate, kind and talented veterinarian who thoroughly enjoys working with our patients and their people.
Dr. Kara Stem
Dr. Kara Stem was born in Altus, Oklahoma and grew up in many states of the southeast before her family settled in Charleston, South Carolina when she was eight. She has always loved animals and had many furry, scaled, and feathered family members including dogs, cats, birds, snakes, turtles, ducks, fish, and horses (oh my!).
In preparation for vet school, Dr. Stem spent hundreds of hours shadowing her hometown veterinarian and did an internship working with raptors, birds of prey and shore birds in Charleston, SC. As a young woman, Dr. Stem spent most of her free time riding her horse, Nellie, and playing the viola in various orchestras throughout middle school, high school, and college. In 2015, she and Nellie ended their 8 years of competitive showing with a World Championship in Road Hack at the PHBA World Show. Nellie now lives on a beautiful farm in Athens and enjoys being a spoiled pasture ornament. Dr. Stem graduated with honors from Clemson University with a degree in Animal Veterinary Science in 2017 and began her DVM degree at UGA that same year. While in vet school, she got engaged and married to her high school sweetheart, David. They bought a house in Athens in 2019 and live there with their 3 dogs, 2 cats, 6 chickens and assorted fish.
Dr. Stem graduated from UGA College of Veterinary Medicine in 2021 with an emphasis in small animal medicine and specific interests in soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, dermatology, dentistry, geriatric care and household exotic wellness and husbandry. As a recent addition to the Boulevard Animal Hospital family, she is excited to become a part of the Athens community and care for Athens’ pets.
When not practicing medicine, Dr. Stem enjoys travelling, listening to music, reading, writing, taking long walks, and spending time with her husband and pets on their back porch when the weather is nice.
